It’s my turn to do one of these posts! My name is Christina Gregory, a senior at Duquesne University, and I am the Fall 2015 Editorial Intern at St. Lynn’s Press.
I truly think I lucked out with St. Lynn’s being my first internship. Everyone mentioned that I would be “tossed in the water,” but there was no way to know that this included reading a whole book’s worth of material a day (or more!), attending hours of meetings, drafting up loads of correspondence and doing as much research as I would do on a paper for college! Good thing I decided that I love everything about editorial!
I’ve also gained tons of knowledge about putting together a tip sheet for books and what’s important when preparing for the marketing phase of a book. Despite it sometimes feeling like we’ve already hurdled the mountain after finishing our edits for a book, there’s always another aspect of the process that’s begging for our attention.
In addition to learning all these practical things about publishing, this internship also gave me overall knowledge in the best way possible. I always feel as though I have the support and guidance of everyone at St. Lynn’s throughout my time here, especially when I don’t know what to do (or even when I did!). To me, it has been the best type of internship I could have asked for, because I was never afraid to ask a question or even propose an idea I had.
One last thing about my learning experience here at St. Lynn’s: there’s so much to learn about gardening! I’ll definitely be spending a little more time in the garden with my newfound knowledge. I can’t wait to see what else I learn!
