Former Steelers player, Josh Miller and self-proclaimed beer expert and football fanatic, Shawn Allen, spent the 2013 NFL season documenting the unique personalities that define one of the largest and most passionate fan bases in the world – Steelers Nation. The story of the Great Steelers Country Road Trip is told in Miller and Allen’s new book, ALWAYS A HOME GAME™: Our Journey Through Steelers Country in 140 Days (St. Lynn’s Press, July 2014).
In the 1970s and 80s, tens of thousands of Pittsburgh natives moved away and migrated to cities from coast to coast. But they never forgot their allegiance to their favorite black and gold football team. Today, there are more than seven hundred Steelers bars across America. On game days you’ll find these avid fans at their local watering holes, in cities big and small, cheering on their favorite “home team.” As an example, Harold’s Corral, outside of Phoenix, sells season tickets for a seat at the bar or a table. In 2010, for the Super Bowl between Pittsburgh and Green Bay, 5,000 people showed up at Harold’s to cheer on the Steelers.
Miller and Allen’s journey began at the Tilted Kilt on the North Shore of Pittsburgh, but the pair visited all 31 of the NFL cities, including Tampa, Phoenix, Buffalo and San Diego.
They toasted the black and gold with Steelers fans at more than 100 restaurants and bars across the U.S. to get a taste of Steelers Nation outside of the ‘Burgh. Filled with more than 200 color photographs and interviews, this book will take sports fans far and wide into those game-day celebrations, with features of former players, their post-Steelers lives and where they are today.
