It’s Always a Home Game in The Steel City Garden (Activity Included)

The days are getting shorter and the leaves are changing color… it’s becoming fall in Pittsburgh! Many of us are relieved to have a break from the heat, but what Yinzers really get pumped up for in the fall is the start of Steelers and Penguins season.

But what does sports have to do with St. Lynn’s Press—and the garden? Well, did you know that we’ve published two Steel City themed books? After all, we’re located right in the South Side of Pittsburgh across the Hot Metal Bridge… right next to the Steelers’ practice field! We can’t help but show some black and gold pride.

The first of our two ’Burgh-themed titles is for those of you who can always be seen waving your Terrible Towels at your favorite watering hole—Always a Home Game: Our Journey Through Steelers Country in 140 Days by Josh Miller, former punter for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Shawn Allen, an “everyday” Steelers fan. This guide profiles their journey through sports bars in 32 cities across the nation, rating the bar on its level of dedication to the Steelers and also the quality of the beer. If you’re looking for a holiday gift for the diehard Steelers fan in your life or need to know where to watch the game while on the road for business or pleasure, Always a Home Game is for you. Order it from our website now.

The second title gives any gardener who bleeds black and gold a chance to show their true colors in a way they’ll love—The Steel City Garden: Creating a One-of-a-Kind Garden in Black and Gold by Doug Oster, a Pittsburgh garden expert. With listings of yellow, gold and black plants to dress up your garden for game day to several creative project ideas for sports themed and black-and-gold colored accents in the garden, The Steel City Garden gives both the diehard and casual black and gold fan tips for hitting a home run, shooting a goal and scoring a touchdown in the garden. Even though Steelers and Penguins season means the start of colder weather, you can still garden while rooting for your favorite team. Here’s a fun planter idea from The Steel City Garden that can be used as an outdoor garden accent or an indoor planter during sports season: Container Cleats.

Plant: Portulaca or Sedum

Where It Works Best: “Full sun is always best for these plants, but the containers (shoes) are so small, they will dry out quickly. I’d put them in morning sun with late afternoon shade. Since portulaca and sedum are bulletproof, they will only need to be watered every couple of days. Give them some liquid organic fertilizer every few weeks.”

Pests and Diseases: “Both plants are pest and disease free.”

“Fill the shoe with a good planting mix and then push the roots of the plant down into the shoe.”
